Incredible drawings by Tara Tucker.
The Birthday Party
I’m in love with these images from Australian photographer Vee Spears‘ Birthday Party series. I saw them for the first time at in the Jackson Fine Art exhibit at last year’s AIPAD show in New York, and can’t shake them. I want the boxer.
Sao Paolo Planning: Ramon Martins, Derlon Almeida
I was recently invited to visit the IBGM Gem and Jewelry Design Show in Brazil, and am very much looking forward to my first trip back to Sao Paolo in seven years. Last time I had a ten-month-old baby and was visiting friends and family. While a terrific trip full of home made meals and riodizios, my mobility was somewhat limited. This time I’m on my own and super excited about meeting some amazing designers, sipping a caipirinha at Baretto at the Hotel Fasano, and picking up some prints by Ramon Martins and Derlon Almeida at Choque Cultural. Wall candy below…
Hot to Trot…
I feel immorally covetous about the Globe-Trotter series of travel cases.
The brand was established in 1897 by Englishman, David Nelken and doesn’t come with a very shabby client list… Globe-trotter has outfitted world-class adventurers including Captain Robert Falcon Scott, who traveled with Globe-Trotter on the infamous Antarctic expedition in 1912. Sir Winston Churchill used a Globe-Trotter Dispatch Case during his position as Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924. H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II chose Globe-Trotter for her honeymoon luggage in 1947 (and continues use her cases to this day). Sir Edmund Hilary ascended to first base camp with Globe-Trotter during his conquest of Everest in 1953. ’Nuff said.
Back Work: Peacock Garden Chairs
Saw a ton of these peacock back chairs in wrought iron and rattan on my last few trip to Jamaica and Mexico. Love the Victorian meets Caribbean garden vibe.
Killing Spree
Spreepark was an amusement park in the former East Berlin opened in 1961. Now abandoned after a bankruptcy and the former owner in a Peruvian prison for trying to smuggle cocaine from Peru to Germany in the masts of the Flying Carpet ride, all that’s left are carcasses of the park’s old attractions. What I’d do for one of those swans. The final scene from the 2011 film Hanna was filmed here.
This Just INN… Ruschmeyer’s in Montauk
Super cute video for Ruschmeyer’s, a summer camp-styled lodge we need to check out this summer… brought to us by the talented folks at King and Grove. On the property is a dreamy restaurant that serves up razor clams and other seafood delights paired with “biodynamic, sustainable, and organic wines”. Up the road is the equally adorable Surf Lodge by the same crew… Love the lanyard keychains. Arts & Crafts anyone?
Design Flashback: A Favorite Decor Project
I just came across photos from one of my favorite event design projects from quite a few years ago. It was a New York-based artist’s birthday party – and I designed environmental and tabletop installations and vignettes for her downtown studio. Her taste was wonderfully eccentric, she loved taxidermy, collecting antique hunting trophies, and portrayals of nature that evoked visceral responses. My kind of girl.
The design approach was bacchanalian… Huge, primitive slabs of meats, breads, and cheeses piled up extravagantly on tables overflowing with leaves, feathers, olives, grapes, dipping candles, and dried mosses. Tables were covered in horns, leather books, and beautifully aged animal specimens. Eating required tearing and sharing, and seating areas included a stunning 18th century lacquered Chinese bed. The only lighting was candlelight and the odd lamp. Very carnal in every way. To this day I am besieged with jealous with memories her jaw-dropping printed silk caftan. And then there were the guys in the horse heads…
