Flyer Than Fly

japan_hermes_helicopter

Pass the smelling salts… Japan recently introduced the Hermés Shuttle.  The service will provide a 30-minute luxury helicopter shuttle service between central Tokyo and Narita International Airport.  The four passenger helicopter will take about 22 flights a day and charge approximately $790 for a one-way trip.  And yes, it has Toile H fabric interiors.

Anything plus technology is better. Especially shopping. I think that one of the best ideas ever was the big box stores installing those scanner machines that let you check the prices of items before you check out. I feel like I’m getting a better deal on just about anything if I’ve scanned it myself at some point in the purchasing process.

In 2007, Target (as usual) took things to a new level by launching TargetLists – a system that lets you skip around the store making downloadable wish lists with YOUR OWN little scanner! You could then buy your picks online, send your lists to generous relatives, or print them out and hope for some extra cash at the end of the month.

These days 2007 is like twenty years ago. Scanners? Whatever. Retailers have broadened their gaze to include the paradigm-shifting reach of sites like Twitter and Facebook – platforms that have opened up entirely new ways for retail and fashion brands to interact with us. Nimble brands like Diane von Fürstenberg, Lacoste, Barneys New York, American Apparel, and iconic fashion boutique Colette in Paris have realized that daily relevance is key to retaining loyal customers with increasingly shorter-term memories.

Vanity Case

Train Case Class Trip

The hard-sided train case wins first prize for “chicest-yet-most-idiotically-cumbersome-and-unnecessary-female-thing-to-carry”. Ahh… music to my ears… By the way, what ever happened to these?

My mom had the most fabulous chalky blue one that she got in the divorce in 1978. It still had my dad’s initials engraved on it (which were the same as mine) and I think that’s why she never gave it away. Needless to say I have soft spot in my heart for these.

I recently scooped up a baby pink polka dot one for our little girl at Claw Money‘s backyard garage sale in City Island (Thanks Claudia!). She keeps her miniature horses in it, which is the perfect use for it, really. Some great vintage ones here… Get the whole story »

Anyone’s Guess

Just as I’m vowing to never experience another New York City winter along comes this image. I found it deep in one of the internet rabbit holes I go down late at night. Can anyone the designer? I thought Courreges, but they’re not…

Gall Stoned

Recently Matt and I were sitting in our favorite geographic location in the universe and France Gall‘s Laisse Tomber les Filles popped up on the playlist. Needless to say this is kind of an obscure song by a semi-obscure French, mid-century pop artist that I happen to love – which made me love our special place even more.

Here’s a video for her song Sole, Mare, Cielo, Amore, sung in Italian… I love that the words dont match up with her perfect mouth and how she looks like she’s had one too many red, white, or yellow pills. And the construction paper heart. It’s like Cocteau Twins if Elizabeth Fraser had been a gorgeous skinny French blond with perfect cheekbones.

Red Badge of Courreges

Amazing images from André Courrèges‘ heyday in Assouline‘s beautiful tome. Why no one has re-taken this bull by the horns is beyond me. Maybe some things are better left alone.
