No doubt one of the most misunderstood games on the planet (somewhere on the same level as “Curling” I’d imagine) Jai Alai has some of the best art direction in sports. Awe at the “fastest sport in the world” – with a ball traveling up to 188 mph – is only eclipsed by the amazingly designed uniforms and perfectly art-directed courts. Thanks to Florida and the Cubans in Hialiah for keeping this alive. You can’t get much chic-er than this:

Reading in depth about Cuban poster art for that last post, I came across several references to Wilfredo Lam, the Cuban surrealist painter and his negritude take on the artistic schools of the day…

I love the amazing Surrealist / Cubist (influenced by his lifelong friendship and collaborations with Picasso) vibe that uses imagery and symbols from Santeria and his Afro-Cuban heritage. In 1943, he began his most well known work, The Jungle, which was ultimately purchased by the Museum of Modern Art N.Y. and was hung near Picasso’s Guernica.

Another ode to my mixed up DNA (my dad’s side hails from the fair Cuban isle)…

I just used a bunch of these vintage Cuban film and and political posters while designing the interior of The Blue Parrot restaurant in East Hampton this spring. I think I will be papering a wall of my living room with these. A great collection and accompanying history can be found here.

Apparently there is this great project called Ghost Posters which is a collection of 25 silkscreened movie posters for Cuban movies that were never made, either because the manuscripts for the films were censored or funding fell through. Each poster is made by a different Cuban graphic artist, and there are some really amazing pieces. It’s a great concept, and the posters are allegedly on tour and recently shown at Rutgers Univeristy. The project has a website, but it doesn’t list any future venues.

After four years, The Blue Parrot reopens with a motley crew of former notorious patrons-turned-investors.
These awesome crepe paper flowers are traditionally made for use during the Mexican Day of the Dead. Apparently making these folded beauties is a huge cottage industry in Texas’ Mexican communities because big blooming flowers are hard to come by and are really expensive. Nearly everyone there buys paper flowers to decorate their relatives’ gravesites during the Olmec-inspired Dia De Los Muertos festivities. I love them for our stark white living room and cause they won’t poison the dogs.

If you’re ambitious, learn how to make them HERE. If not you can always CHEAT and say you did.

The explosion of eastern and fringe religions in the U.S. can be attributed to a myriad of causes – from the public flogging the Catholic Church has received lately, to the widespread violence of religious fundamentalists in the Middle East. This big-religion weariness has not only created an unprecedented interest in the Eastern traditions, but also in the cruder (and once taboo) syncretic religions of Santeria, Voodoo, and Palo Mayumbe. According to many accounts, more and more Anglos are turning to these African-based religious traditions for the simpler, non-political, and more organic spiritual experiences they offer.

As a Cuban American, I am most familiar with Santeria – a tradition that emerged in the 1600′s when African slaves arrived in the New World and were immediately baptized en masse by the Catholic bishops. Their religion suppressed in this strange new land, they clung to their beliefs by attributing the virtues of each of their holy deities to a Catholic Saint. Now they could worship freely under the guise of Catholicism.

Santeria and Voodoo are alive and flourishing today, and nowhere can you more easily experience this colorful subculture than by stopping by one the city’s hundreds of Botanicas, or religious shops in the largely Hispanic and West Indian neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens, and Uptown. These a places are one-stop shopping for all your spiritual health and beauty needs – kind of like a Sephora for the Soul. You can get advice, your aura cleansed, or find the right perfumes and washes to rid evil spirits and attract love or fortune. The art direction on most of the products’ packaging is equally brilliant. You can literally fill your medicine cabinet with some of the coolest looking goods and best smelling lotions and potions for twenty bucks.

So take a trip out to the boroughs and come back with products that will make you the envy of your girlfriends. You may even be able to get rid of some of the ones you don’t like so much.
