Leyen’s Eye

Picture 12

As I prepare for fall, redecorating, and my newly joined Art Nouveau class, I’m thinking about early twentieth century illustrators.   I’ve always loved the visuals in that slice of history. Lately I’ve been collecting images by J.C. Leyendecker.  I was shocked when I realized that today that I unwittingly to run by his magnificent old estate every morning on my morning loop!

As states Wikipedia, “The premier illustrator for the enormously popular Saturday Evening Post for much of the first half of the 20th century, Leyendecker’s work both reflected and helped mold many of the visual aspects of the era’s culture in America. The mainstream image of Santa Claus as a jolly fat man in a red fur-trimmed coat was popularized by Leyendecker, as was the image of the New Year Baby. The tradition of giving flowers as a gift on Mother’s Day was started by Leyendecker’s May 30, 1914 Saturday Evening Post cover depicting a young bellhop carrying hyacinths.”

La La Lanne

Lalanne-Pam-Bristow

Always a fan of  architect and decorative artist Claude Lalanne (and admiring her Banbiloba and Gator settees from afar for years,) seeing her desk in the Tom Ford store on Madison Avenue yesterday made me remember how much I love this woman.  Apparently  her pieces have hit an all time high, with a set of mirrors and a bar at last year’s Yves Saint Laurent’s estate auction last year going for a cool $3.5 million. This month an massive 150+ piece exhibition on Lalanne’s work designed by Peter Marino opens a the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Looks like Paris in the Spring for this girl!

More pics after the jump.

Hello Jai Alai

Jai-Alai-Pam-Bristow

No doubt one of the most misunderstood games on the planet (somewhere on the same level as “Curling” I’d imagine) Jai Alai has some of the best art direction in sports.  Awe at the “fastest sport in the world” – with a ball traveling up to 188 mph – is only eclipsed by the amazingly designed uniforms and perfectly art-directed courts.  Thanks to Florida and the Cubans in Hialiah for keeping this alive.  You can’t get much chic-er than this:
